Description
Usui, Yoshiharu. "Chichi eno nagai michinori--Eyurin Wo Meiyonoken sanbusaku kenkyu [A Long Way to Fatherhood--A Study of Evelyn Waugh's Sword of Honour trilogy]." Seikei Jinbun Kenkyu [Seikei Journal of the Graduate School of Humanities] 7 (1998): 71-87. Abstract: Evelyn Waugh's ideal image of a man was a gentleman father. Waugh's horror was not to become a gentleman father. When his first marriage broke up, Waugh thought the cause was his immaturity, and he traveled to British colonial frontiers as penance. Waugh remarried and became a father at last. Waugh could not find the ideal world of a gentleman even in the countryside. Waugh joined the army to seek the ideal. However, Waugh could not find it there either. In the end, Waugh found the image of the ideal gentleman in Catholics who achieve their mission through personal love. By depicting Guy Crouchback as the protagonist, Waugh makes his trilogy into a confession of his wandering soul's attempt to reach the solution.
